What Are Dental Fillings?
Dental fillings are a common restorative treatment used to repair teeth damaged by decay. When bacteria create cavities in your teeth, fillings remove the decay and restore the tooth's structure and function. At Spring Valley Dental Associates, we use modern, tooth-colored composite materials that blend naturally with your smile.
Types of Dental Fillings We Offer
We prioritize your health and aesthetics by offering mercury-free, tooth-colored composite fillings. These advanced materials bond directly to your tooth structure, providing excellent durability while maintaining a natural appearance. Unlike older silver amalgam fillings, composite fillings require less removal of healthy tooth structure and offer superior cosmetic results.
Why Choose Tooth-Colored Fillings?
-
Natural Appearance: Virtually invisible, matching your tooth color exactly
-
Mercury-Free: Safe composite materials for peace of mind
-
Conservative Treatment: Preserves more of your natural tooth structure
-
Strong Bond: Chemically bonds to teeth for added support
The Dental Filling Process
Your filling appointment typically takes 30-60 minutes and can often be completed in a single visit. We begin by numbing the area with local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. Next, we carefully remove the decayed portion of the tooth and clean the cavity. The tooth-colored filling material is then applied in layers and hardened with a special curing light. Finally, we shape and polish the filling to match your bite and natural tooth contours.
Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings
Modern composite fillings offer numerous advantages over traditional silver fillings. They provide excellent durability, typically lasting 5-10 years with proper care. The tooth-colored material is virtually invisible, allowing you to smile confidently. Composite fillings also bond chemically to your tooth, providing additional structural support and requiring less removal of healthy tooth structure during placement.
Amalgam vs. Composite: What to Know
Some people remember silver amalgam fillings, which are still used in certain situations. Amalgam is a mixture of mercury and powdered alloys that creates a strong, long-lasting material. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration notes that amalgam fillings can be a cost-effective option for people with a high risk of cavities because of their durability. However, amalgam contains elemental mercury that releases low levels of vapor; while it's generally considered safe for most patients, the FDA advises that certain high-risk groups (such as pregnant people, nursing mothers and those with kidney problems) discuss alternative materials. At Spring Valley Dental Associates we exclusively use mercury-free composite fillings for a natural appearance and peace of mind.
Caring for Your New Filling
After your filling, you may experience mild sensitivity for a few days, which is normal. Avoid very hot or cold foods for the first 24 hours and stick to soft foods until any numbness wears off. Maintain excellent oral hygiene by brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and flossing regularly. Regular dental checkups help ensure your filling remains in good condition.
