What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a technique used to help patients relax during dental procedures. For many people, fear of the dentist can prevent them from getting the care they need. Sedation dentistry uses medications to reduce stress and help patients feel more comfortable; patients remain awake but typically do not feel pain or remember the procedure.

Sedation is often recommended for people with: dental anxiety, fear of needles, strong gag reflex, sensitive teeth, claustrophobia, or those who need complex or lengthy treatments.

Types of Sedation We Offer

We tailor the level of sedation to your needs and health history. Depending on your situation we may recommend:

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

A mild inhaled sedative that helps you feel relaxed yet fully conscious during shorter procedures.

Oral Conscious Sedation

A prescribed pill taken about an hour before your visit that creates a deeper sense of calm while keeping you awake.

Before Your Appointment

To prepare for sedation, you'll take the prescribed pill approximately one hour before your procedure. We ask that you arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from the appointment, as the medication can leave you drowsy. Our dentist will review your medical history and monitor your breathing and blood pressure to ensure a safe experience.

During Your Procedure

Once the sedative takes effect, you'll feel deeply relaxed. Many patients describe a sensation of heaviness in their limbs or a slight tingling. You remain conscious and can answer questions, but you may not remember all the details of your visit. Throughout your procedure, we continuously monitor your vital signs.

After Your Appointment

The calming effects of sedation can linger after your appointment. Because you might feel sleepy or unsteady, it's important to avoid driving, operating machinery or engaging in strenuous activities for the rest of the day. Having a companion drive you home is required. Some patients experience mild side effects such as nausea, headaches or sluggishness, which generally resolve within a few hours.

Is Sedation Right for You?

Sedation dentistry can benefit anyone who feels anxious about dental work, has a strong gag reflex, is sensitive to pain or requires extensive treatment. During your consultation, we'll discuss your concerns and medical history to determine which level of sedation is appropriate.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Choosing sedation can make dental visits easier and more efficient. Sedation dentistry allows anxious patients to receive the care they need without the stress that often leads to avoidance. The Cleveland Clinic notes that sedation can also make longer procedures feel shorter and may reduce the number of appointments needed to complete complex treatments.
