Recognizing Early Signs of Gum Disease

Healthy gums are essential to a bright smile. Learn to recognize the warning signs of gum disease and take action before it progresses.

Early Warning Signs

Gingivitis often begins quietly. Watch for swollen or puffy gums, persistent bad breath or a sour taste, gums that bleed when you brush or floss, receding gums that make teeth look longer, and teeth that feel loose or a shift in your bite. These symptoms signal inflammation and infection beneath the gumline, even if you're not experiencing pain.

Why Early Detection Matters

Gum disease progresses from gingivitis to periodontitis if left untreated. In gingivitis, the inflammation is limited to the gums and can be reversed with improved home care and professional cleanings. Once the infection reaches the bone, it can lead to recession, bone loss and tooth mobility. Research links periodontal disease to systemic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and adverse pregnancy outcomes, so early detection protects more than just your smile.

At‑Home Prevention Tips

Brush twice a day with a soft‑bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, floss or use interdental brushes daily, and rinse with an alcohol‑free mouthwash. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months. A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables supports gum health, while limiting sugary snacks and drinks helps reduce plaque. Smokers are several times more likely to develop periodontitis; quitting is one of the best things you can do for your gums.

Professional Care & Treatment

Regular dental visits allow us to remove hardened tartar and detect gum problems early. For mild cases of gingivitis, a professional cleaning and improved home care may be all you need. For more advanced disease, deep cleaning procedures such as scaling and root planing remove plaque and calculus below the gumline to encourage healing. Our periodontist may also recommend local antibiotics or other therapies depending on the severity.

If you notice any signs of gum disease or it's been more than six months since your last dental visit, please schedule a periodontal evaluation. Early intervention helps prevent irreversible damage and supports overall health.
