Recovering from Wisdom Teeth Removal
Proper care after extraction helps you heal comfortably and reduce complications. Follow these tips for a smooth recovery.
Protect the Blood Clot
After your wisdom tooth is removed, a blood clot forms in the socket. This clot stops bleeding, protects the exposed bone and allows new tissue to grow. For the first 24 hours do not rinse, spit, drink hot liquids or use a straw—anything that creates suction can dislodge the clot. Smoking or vaping should be avoided for at least three days because nicotine reduces blood flow and dramatically increases the risk of dry socket.
Rest, Manage Pain & Swelling
Plan to rest for the first couple of days and keep your head elevated when lying down. Apply an ice pack to your cheek for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off during the first 24 hours to minimise swelling. Use over‑the‑counter anti‑inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen as directed to ease discomfort and reduce inflammation. Avoid strenuous activity until your dentist says it's safe to resume.
Oral Hygiene & Cleaning
Maintain good oral hygiene while protecting the extraction site. Brush your other teeth as normal, but stay away from the surgical area for the first few days. After 24 hours, begin gentle rinses with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) several times a day to reduce bacteria and aid healing. Do not use commercial mouthwashes containing alcohol during the first week.
Diet & Lifestyle
Stick to soft, nourishing foods such as yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies and soups for the first few days. Avoid hard, crunchy, chewy or spicy items that could irritate the socket. Stay hydrated by sipping water and avoid alcohol and carbonated drinks, which can disturb the clot. If only one side was treated, chew on the opposite side. Resume solid foods gradually as your comfort improves.
